Boys and girls blaze trail at Lee Cricket Club
By Andy Devoy

The cricket season got off to a slow start due to the monsoon conditions that arrived in May, with most of the early games falling victim to the wet weather. The most exciting game so far this season was when the Sunday team entertained Charles Stewart-Liberty’s touring team, Tuaregs. Tuaregs batted first and for some strange reason The Lee decided to bowl and field like I’ve never seen before. Six catches were held, then one spectacular run-out and some very accurate bowling and Tuaregs were skittled for 109. The Lee’s innings got off to a brisk start before the wickets began to fall all too regularly and we stumbled towards the victory target.

The ninth wicket fell when we were still three runs short of victory. Two runs and the scores were level. Then young James Cook clipped the ball to square leg, the fielder (none other than Charles Stewart-Liberty) dived to catch it but it just evaded him and The Lee scraped home.

cricket 1B The Colts cricket on Friday nights is proving as popular as ever with over 130 children signed up and playing regularly in the early evening sunshine. It is also a great social event for the parents (is that why it’s so popular?) and some come along just to enjoy a drink and a burger from the BBQ. So even if you haven’t got children why not pop up and join us? Enquire at the bar about social membership or if you’re only popping in on the odd occasion someone will gladly sign you in.

We now have three teams playing hardball cricket in the U10s, U11s and U12s age groups. Unfortunately both the U12s fixtures have fallen foul of the weather but the U11s have enjoyed an excellent start to the season, winning four of their first five games in the Bucks League. The U10s have played two matches, winning one and losing the other.

It’s wonderful to see so many children enjoying cricket at The Lee CC; the future of the club is looking bright. The only thing we do lack is adult playing members, so if you’re interested in playing cricket on a Saturday or Sunday then please contact me at andydevoy@yahoo.co.uk.
