Sarah Joy Peace - a tributeBy David Peace Another part of old Lee Common passed into history with the death last June of Joy. She was born at Lower Bassibones when it was two farm cottages, on the 26th October 1922, the only child of Joe and Dolly Pratt. The family then moved to Hethrons, opposite the allotments. Joy went to Lee Common School and did various jobs in service until war broke out and she went to work at Gerhardy’s in Great Missenden. It was during the war that she met her husband Tom when he was stationed at Woodlands Park. They married in 1946 and set up home in his home town of Warsop in Nottinghamshire. Joy could not settle there and they returned to Lee Common after a year and lived with her parents at Hethrons. They then jointly had Little Orchard built and remained there. Tom died in 1988 and Joy continued to enjoy her garden and feeding birds, foxes and hedgehogs. She always seemed to have somebody for a cup of tea. Phyllis, Lillian, policemen from Great Missenden, and of course Stan and all milkmen until Martin. She will be missed by many. |
