Kew visit far from a wash-out By Trish Swain
Thursday 21st September dawned bright, warm and sunny, a perfect Indian summer’s day: what a shame then that our trip to The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew was on Friday 22nd! The Swan Bottom Ladies and their Friends gathered at Missenden and filled a bus (we were 30 in total) and arrived at Kew Gardens (where due to some nifty negotiations beforehand we had free entry), refreshed, relaxed and ready to enjoy our second outing and guided tour, ‘How Kew Grew’. Just as we finished our coffee, the rain started and never stopped. Being stalwart country folk we were well- equipped and soldiered on, enjoying a tour of the Palm House and seeing the largest tree at Kew (good for sheltering under). We dried out over a pleasant lunch and enjoyed a little ‘retail therapy’ before boarding the coach home. As we crossed Kew Bridge the rain stopped, the sun came out and we enjoyed the gorgeous rainbow straddling the river. Rainfall total back home was 0.85” (21mm). Many thanks to Frankie Little for her tremendous feat of organisation and here’s to next year’s visit (somewhere indoors perhaps?). |
