Clerk's Corner By Viv Robins
With Remembrance Sunday falling due on 12th November, now seems a good time to recall the work of one of the lesser-sung charities, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, or SSAFA, Forces Help. This organisation runs a nationwide support line for all serving and ex-Service personnel and their families, to help them deal with problems as varied as depression, bereavement, relationship breakdown and debt. The service is completely confidential and the number – 0800 731 4880 – is open from 10:30 am to 10:30 pm, 365 days a year. In Bucks the SSAFA works closely with the Royal British Legion and both charities would welcome new recruits to the teams of trained volunteers who do this vital work. Full training is provided and travel expenses re-imbursed. Anyone interested in the Chesham area should contact Kerr Gibb on 675343. Dog-owners take note Those of us involved with the Parish Council have perhaps come to take for granted the resourcefulness and D.I.Y. skills of our Chairman, but in my opinion he has now surpassed himself with the manufacture of this little wooden box discreetly fixed to the side of the fort in the playground. Unfortunately its purpose is not quite so tasteful, which is to store polythene bags for the use of dog-owners to pick up after their pets. For too long the occasional dog-walker has let the side down by allowing his (or her) animal to foul the footpath and even the allotments, and there really is no excuse now that the B. Usborne Memorial Bag Dispenser is at hand. |
