Season goes out on a high: The Lee Cricket Club
By Jon Swain

cricket club On Saturday, 30th September our season ended with an excellent day of cricket for all ages, a sumptuous tea, an attempt to empty the bar, and the presentation of the trophies won by our players.

The cricket was a six-a-side tourney, with each side having a mixture of gnarled old stagers/has-beens, boosted by the injection of youthful exuberance and high potential. Here was the chance for the Young Pretenders to show their progress and blow away older foes. Like the sides, the play was mixed, and performed amongst deluges of monsoon-like proportions. It all went down to the last ball, and generated huge excitement.

In between monsoons, we feasted on the epitome of cricket teas: home-made sandwiches, cakes and scones, washed down with lashings of tea. These added ballast for stability but slowed other departments.

A muddied assembly then celebrated the awards of the trophies whilst quenching thirsts. The most prestigious of these was the coveted ‘Clubman of the Year’, awarded by the vote of the membership, and won by Andrew Devoy, with commendations due, in no particular order, to Paul Woodhouse, Justin Lewis and John Goldby. Of course many others contributed to a wonderful season: too many to list here, but the thanks of all involved are offered. We all look forward to next season!
