Leeside Nursery News By Suzanne Beaney Seven children left us in July to start their new schools in September; we hope they have settled well. We welcomed four new children to the Nursery, all of whom have settled really well. Our topic for this half-term is ‘food’; the children have been learning which foods are good for us and which are not quite so good. The crafts have included making their favourite food out of salt dough and painting them, potato prints, pasta collage, necklaces made out of dyed ‘penne’ pasta, and finding out which vegetables sink and which float in water. Would you guess right? We walked down the road to Lee Common School to hear the older children’s rehearsal for Harvest Festival at the kind invitation of Mrs Richardson. We took along cans of food to be distributed along with the school’s donations and we sang a couple of songs, then we were invited to play with their Nursery class and share their toys. In the school curriculum we have to include festivals from other countries (religions). This term was Rosh ha’shanah and Diwali. Rosh ha’shanah is the Jewish New Year and the children saw a Kippah (hat), a Rabbi doll and a Shofar, which is a ram’s horn wind instrument (no one could get a sound out of it). For Diwali (Festival of Light for Hindus), the children made clay pots to hold a candle and decorated them with sequins and glitter. They tried on Saris and had rice, naan bread and poppadoms for their snack time. The costumes and items for the two festivals were borrowed from the ‘Metas Centre’. |
