Ode to Lee cricket pitch
By Justin Lewis (April
2004)The blessed green field that is the cricket pitch, standing as it has for 125 years... ... Little has changed; it’s just got firmer, still surrounded by its magnificent trees, its view still the same as when I first walked around it 40 years ago. Hiding in the corner is the pavilion, once a proud building but now looking rather sad after 25 seasons of combat. Now plans are being made to change this too! What will it be? What can I do to ensure this building will be as beautiful as the grounds it stands on? What can I do to ensure this building is a charming representation of how proud I am to be a part of this community? I know, join the Club! No, I’ve done that. Become Chairman? No, that’s going too far. Oh no, I’ve done that too and that’s why I’m here. I know, get you to join the Club. Come and see what they have planned, have your say and there’s Friday night socials, ferret-racing, dinner dances and of course CRICKET. What better excuse do you need for standing in the middle of a field day-dreaming about how things used to be? |
