Can I start with a big ‘Thank You’ to last month’s guest editor Gilbert Nockles who I think you will agree turned out to be excellent value for a fiver (and it wasn’t even we who had to pay it). Gilbert’s fizz and enthusiasm were such that we have invited him to take another turn later in the year. Last month’s heavy snowfall has prompted a flurry of articles and photographs. They include Jules Swain on the joys of sledging and a contribution from Liz Stewart-Liberty which I think we must now describe as being in the finest Fortgang tradition. Of course the other big talking point of the month has been cricket, or more precisely the dispute over the siting of the practice nets at The Lee. Determined to rise to the unwonted challenge of a real news story, we decided to delay going to press until we could include the verdict of the planning meeting on February 15th which was that the nets should come down. Andy Devoy writes here of how the Cricket Club plans to respond to what for them is a hugely disappointing decision. Elsewhere, after Marilyn Burrows wrote last month about how her son came to be working in Tanzania, we have a vivid frontline report from Alex himself. Talking of last month’s Newsletter, some of you may have spotted that it was mistakenly labelled the January edition (we were so busy combing the small print for libel that no-one thought to look at the dateline!). Anyway we have now caught up with ourselves and copy for the April edition should go to John Fortgang please. |
