scouts logo Wanted: scout leader to build on success
By Steve Burrows

I was never a scout in my youth! It was my eldest son who persuaded me to help on troop nights at Lee Common’s HQ. That was 11 years ago, and since then I have seen both sons through the troop, along with our daughter’s enthusiasm for scouting taking her on to the Explorers Section. Initially it was interesting enough just to assist the established leaders with in-house activities; however, I enjoyed the buzz of working with local youngsters in a way which developed my own knowledge and interests, and that has kept me involved ever since.

The adult training courses within the association’s progressive training scheme allow leaders to learn from experts in many disciplines, inter-acting with groups of similarly motivated people in an environment completely detached from the daily grind of earning a living! My own preferences for hill-walking and kayaking have been well catered for, and my qualifications have opened up some terrific opportunities to lead groups of young people on camp weeks and special events across the country.

Lee Common Scout Group is, as far as our district is concerned, in the ‘Premier League’, with an excellent track record of operating within the true spirit of scouting. I was lucky enough to inherit the leadership of the troop from Chris Nevill and carry it forward with a superb team in support. It has been a privilege, and enormous fun, to be part of it all. So why am I giving up in the summer?

Well, my life is moving on and I believe a breath of fresh air in the ideas department could give the troop a new approach and enthusiasm for the future. It’s also easier to make changes when the troop is successful and there is expertise on hand to guide and encourage.

Our Group Scout Leader, Chris Nevill, would be pleased to give details to anyone who feels they can make this much-valued commitment. He can be contacted on 864881
