Cricket News – The Teams Surge AheadBy Andy Devoy After a soggy start, with two of the first three Fridays washed out, the colts cricket season has got into gear. A sunny Friday evening with lots of children playing cricket is always a joy to watch. We finally invested in a new BBQ as air traffic control for Heathrow complained of poor visibility on Fridays in the area. Our colts teams have been in terrific form. The U13s sat proudly top of their league before a couple of defeats knocked them off top spot. As I write our U11A & U11B teams are second in their respective leagues. The U11A team have reached the semi-finals of the knockout cup which, for a village club competing against the likes of Chesham and Wycombe, is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all involved; it is a huge team effort. And well done to our U9s who also had a convincing victory recently. What about the adults? Again the weather has put paid to many games but a sound start to the league season. I’m pleased to say we have yet again reached the quarter finals of the knockout cup, let’s hope for further progress. Cricket, like most sports, can demonstrate that there is a fine line between success and failure. In a recent Sunday game against Little Missenden it all came down to the last ball. We needed a wicket to win, they needed four to win, anything else would be a draw. The ball was hit towards the boundary, the fielder was underneath it, both hands clasped the ball – we had won. Alas defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. The ball spilled from the fielder’s hands and dribbled agonisingly over the boundary. Still a great game of cricket. |
