The Lee W.I.By Joyce Swain The Lee W.I. met in the Parish Hall on Tuesday 12th June. After dealing with county events, including a coach trip to Coventry and Stratford, we enjoyed a talk on the ‘History of policing in Britain’ from Mr Wolley. He explained that it was not until the early part of the 19th century that the Bow Street Runners were engaged in policing, and not until 50 years or so later that Sir Robert Peel established the Metropolitan Police, followed eventually by local and county police forces. Before that it was up to each parish or town to provide one. We concluded with our usual delicious tea. |
