flower show Flower Show “Singing in the rain...”
By Anne Kenyon

On Friday, 20th July we were setting up the marquee in our wellies, squelching under foot and wondering what we would find on Saturday morning.

Saturday came and the marquee was reasonably dry and in true British spirit the exhibitors trudged across the field as no cars were allowed on to the ground. We were all very concerned for the cricket ground and thank the club for permitting the show to take place on the ground under the conditions. The show went on and thanks to all exhibitors, stall holders and many other participants we had a good show in spite of some heavy showers during the afternoon. I also want to thank Waitrose in Chesham which donated, cooked and presented a large salmon for the judges’ lunch. It looked and tasted magnificent.

We have a new Chudley cup for the Best in Show for all divisions excluding vegetables, fruit and flowers. Our president John and Gill are moving away from the area leaving a large gap not only to the Flower Show, but also to the whole village. We wish them every happiness in their new home. Anne Pearce won Best in Show for her magnificent sweet peas and the premier winner of the Chudley cup was Katherine Rice for her quiche. The dog show was again great fun, Best in Show being a flat coat retriever named Louis.

All proceeds are going to ‘Hearing Dogs for the Deaf’ and the show was sponsored by Wendover Heights Veterinary practice. Due to a gala ball at Great Missenden School our dance numbers were down but for the 220 revellers, it was another magical evening.

Now for the ongoing plea - some of us are getting a little long in the tooth (mine are falling out!) and we would welcome new younger blood with fresh ideas. Don’t be shy, it only takes place once a year with three/four meetings, the first being in Sept/Oct and we would welcome newcomers.
