Pressing needBy Barnaby Usborne The season of mist and mellow fruitfulness is nearly upon us again. Unwanted apples bend the boughs or fall to the ground to be raked up and thrown away. It always seems such a pity – although the birds and bugs at the bottom of the garden don’t seem to mind! However, I think I have found a solution to the annual problem of what to do with my surplus apples - too many or too scabby to eat. They can be made into apple juice. Evert Donker, a former resident of Lee Common, has set up shiny newapple-juice making facilities in his garage in Chartridge, fully approved by the Health and Safety Inspectorate. All I have to do is to supply the apples, ideally in 100 kilo lots. Any sort will do, including windfalls providing they have not become too bruised. Evert and his machines will do the rest – chip, press, pasteurize and bottle. From 100 kilos of apples I should get 50 litres of apple juice. Evert will charge £1.50 per bottle for processing and bottling. Anyone interested can call Evert on 776309. |
