From the Editor
Editor or team? By Colin Sully

Well this is a surprise! My appearance as Editor this month comes about as a result of John Fortgang’s unexpected illness (we hope you are well on the road to recovery when you read this, John)… and those next in line all claiming prior engagements. Actually, I don’t really mind being fifth choice – it gives you a good excuse if it all goes pear-shaped!

So… firstly our thanks to Gilbert Nockles (Guest Editor last month) for steering us from summer towards autumn – a time for reflection and for laying new plans for the future. Not by coincidence, this is very much the theme of this month’s Newsletter.

In a reflective mood we have the Rural Dilettante inviting us to give more thought to global issues… and to Gaia! We also have some provocative thoughts on the challenges facing the youth of today and some reflections on the life of Percy Langston – a true Gaian?

Looking to the future, our focus stays close to home. We have an urgent request concerning the Shop, news of plans for winter gritting and a great new competition (exclusive to readers of this Newsletter). The pothole issue also reaches a watershed this month, with a plan that calls for your action.

We have had a bumper crop of contributions this month; so much so that we have had to prune some severely and hold others over. So, please make sure that contributions arrive promptly next month, when the baton goes back to ‘Head Girl’, Viv Robins; copy to her please by 9th October.

Another Editor writes: We are in fact doubly indebted to Colin since as well as standing in at short notice to edit this month’s Newsletter he was also the setter of last month’s, a fact we regrettably failed to acknowledge. Rumours that he is planning a putsch at the next Parish Council meeting have been only half-heartedly denied. Viv Robins.
