It’s a bloomin’ marvel!By Jenny Senior Is this a record? Is it the answer to growing fabulous flowers? I don’t know the professional view, but for what it is worth, I share this with you. Earlier this year, I came across some old nasturtium seeds in our garden shed. I was not surprised to read on the packet “Use by April 1994” because our shed houses quite a few of these items, bought with the best of intentions and sadly forgotten. I usually throw them in the bin. This time I threw them casually in a border, and now they have almost taken over the house, climbing up the walls over any other plants; marching across the path and over the lawn, and blocking the kitchen doorway. They are red, yellow and orange and they are spectacular. What is more, they won a prize in the Flower Show! Can you beat this?
...and this
one’s not bad eitherBy Susan Allison Luckily the Ballinger Horticultural Show takes place on a Thursday evening, when there is seldom any football on television. It is a fun evening, with very good entries. Last month I was thrilled to be awarded first prize and Best in Show for my ‘mixed flowers in a vase’ – 28 different kinds of flower. However, I do feel a bit of a fraud as I would be quite unable to compete with the fruit and veg. on display. |
