Wheelie
bins... againTo the Editor I read Mike Senior's letter about wheelie bins with interest. I agree that the proposed fortnightly collections are not ideal (though may encourage people to recycle glass, plastic, paper and start composting too), but I disagree that wheelie bins are bad news. Around The Lee we have become accustomed to the recycling boxes. I find the rubbish that spews from over-filled black bags, or those ripped open by dogs and foxes, or those bags that are put out early because people are going away, or that falls out as the bags are flung into the collection lorries, far more offensive for aesthetic and ecological reasons. The amount of litter round here is awful, and after ‘bin day’ there's always lots more. Having it securely contained in a wheelie bin would answer the above. I have yet to see a rat get into a properly-closed wheelie bin; the same is not true of black bin liners. Trish Swain Kingswood |
