missenden wine circle Missenden Wine Circle
By Judith Watsham

Missenden Wine Circle was formed in 1989 but, despite its name, actually held its meetings over the years at various locations in Chesham. When faced with the need, in March 2006, to find a new home at short notice, local resident Karel Lewis came to the rescue and suggested The Lee Parish Hall. This has proved to be a real ‘find’ for Missenden Wine Circle, a lovely clean, well-equipped hall with plenty of car parking. The village is to be congratulated on possessing such a great amenity!

The Wine Circle meets on the second Thursday of each January, March, May, July, September and November and holds a dinner in February: the avowed aim being to taste, and learn something about, the wines of the world. The Circle would love to recruit lots of new members, partly because one outcome of moving to a village from a town has been that some members have dropped out; the laws on drinking and driving inevitably affected those Chesham members who previously walked to town centre meetings.

Consequently the Circle is having a recruitment drive – readers are assured that members are always delighted to see new faces at meetings – and on Thursday 8th May there will be a special evening. New members are invited along to learn, free of charge, all about Beaujolais – not just basic Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages, but the 10 Crus, such as Fleurie, Morgon, Brouilly, Julienas and Moulin-à-Vent to name just half of the wines to be tasted that evening.

Obviously the Circle wants to make sure that enough wine will be available for everyone to taste and learn about so if you are interested do ring me (as the secretary) on 774557 for more information – there is an answerphone on that number so if there is no reply you are asked to leave your name and telephone number so that I can ring you back. If you are interested but can’t make that evening then please do ring anyway so that you can be notified of future meetings.
