Your letters
To the EditorWhilst doing family research, I came across The Lee website. My grand- mother (born June 1887, Florence Jane Witney) lived with her parents at 36, Lee Common during the 1901 census. I visited the village last year but could not equate no. 36 to any of the houses. I walked round the churchyard and found the grave of Rose Witney - who married my great-uncle George Sadler. Rose lived at 44, Lee Common in 1901. My question is: does anyone have any idea which house could be 36, Lee Common? Many thanks. Mike Sadler Alicante, Spain (mumike1946@yahoo.com) To the Editor Once again I would like to thank all those who helped on our now annual litter clearance day in March. Also thank you very much to those who collected the rubbish at other times. I don’t know who cleared away the litter on the left towards Chartridge, but what a brilliant job. There have been letters in the national newspapers recently, all making suggestions as to how the government and councils can control this problem. Some suggestions talked of a £1 deposit on cans and bottles, another taking councils to court for not clearing up. They are, it seems, bound by the Litter Act to clean up roads and places detailed on a regular basis. Another suggestion is to fine the owners of cars caught on mobile cameras who jettison litter at hotspots, for example at junction approaches. A high percentage of rubbish collected on the 16th March consisted of cans, bottles and fast food containers, all, I suspect, thrown out of vehicles. Why do we never see this happening? Perhaps we all need to lobby our council and make our views known. Although many of us hate the unsightly litter, we could become complacent and just accept that that is how our countryside, motorways and towns will look in the future. My sister, who lives near Farmingham in Kent, noted the increased rubbish here at Christmas. What message are we giving to our young children? They are told not to drop litter and yet they see it all around them. Pat Chinnery Swan Bottom To the Editor We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you for the support, in words and deeds, which we have received from our friends during our recent difficulties. There are too many to name individually, but you know who you are. We are both on the road to recovery and now look forward to being able to join in all the activities that are planned for The Lee – a great place to live. Thank you again. Jim & Gerry Spence The Lee To the Editor Can I make my annual plea to cat owners to please keep them in at night? We are approaching the most hectic and perilous time for exhausted parent birds desperately trying to feed their fledglings at dawn – this is when they are most at risk from cats.
