Village
Choir ConcertBy Christine Kalveks Earlier this summer Gordon Brown announced his intention to write a book on ‘Britishness’. This followed several speeches in which he attempted to define its essence: “I am here to listen; I am here to learn… I want to discuss… what you think characterises us as the British.” He would have found many answers at The Lee Village Choir Concert on Friday 29th August! This event offered a delightful evening’s entertainment in the idyllic surroundings of Mike and Jenny Senior’s garden on a glorious summer evening. The audience of over 70 was treated to champagne and home-made canapés before being invited by Master of Ceremonies John Fortgang to take their seats under gazebos festooned with union flags.
The Lee Village Choir, under the indefatigable baton of June Lock and accompanied
by Gordon Cumming, performed a repertoire which included Holst’s I Vow to
Thee My Country, Parry’s Jerusalem and old favourites by German, Rutter and
Wilcocks. The choir maintained a high standard of performance throughout
and should be applauded for tackling some very difficult harmonies. An enjoyable instrumental interlude was provided by the Lea Barn Quartet which performed a piece by Crusell and choir contributions were punctuated by solos from our very own English rose, Glenys Groves, who captivated the audience and encapsulated the mood of the evening with her rendition of I Leave My Heart in an English Garden. Skilful lighting effects by Les Brewer and sound reinforcement by Malcolm Weir ensured a magical atmosphere throughout the concert to which the audience could not fail to respond. It was a wonderful occasion, enjoyed by all. Any profit from the event will be shared between the choir fund and St John the Baptist Church. |
