new church Church finances – the stark truth
By Mike Senior

In these days of credit crunch, bank bail-outs and general shortage of cash all round, it may seem like an odd time to approach members of the Parish on the subject of money. Unfortunately, as far as St John the Baptist is concerned, the financial situation is not healthy and no time is better than now to let everybody know the facts.

The numbers are simple. In 2008 the total expenditure of the Church was £46,000. The total income was £36,000. The shortfall was made good by withdrawing £10,000 from our invested funds. Our investments have been hit by reduced interest rates and the decline in the value of our shares; our financial obligations to the Diocese are set to increase; and we are also faced with several high-cost maintenance projects. So it is painfully clear that if our income does not increase then the Parish will soon be unable to cover its costs. If that happens, where do we go from there?

The picture may be stark, but all is not yet lost. It does mean extra giving and even more fund-raising. Even a relatively small amount for each household per week would make all the difference.

A pamphlet setting out the situation will be delivered throughout the Parish with this Newsletter. Please give it your urgent and thoughtful consideration.
