By Jonathan Batten So I have been passed the baton – another virgin Lee Newsletter editor has been let loose to co-ordinate and carve up all manner of news and views from the local populace. The day before the Newsletter team meeting I was caught, like an Easter bunny in the headlights, beneath the glare of my dentist’s overhead inspection light having root canal work. Now that’s a time for concentrating on other things, when your dentist has a 22 mm long drill grinding into your teeth, so I thought about what I might say in this editorial. I sought advice from the Newsletter team: “make it short and punchy or you’ll run out of space” – “this issue is only 24 pages as we are short of cash” – “no inappropriate material”. So, some items are short and some are not so short but all hopefully interesting and to the point. Your letters show that some of you are amused and some are not so amused. Congratulations to Mary Osborne of Sly Corner who will enter her 100th year on 1st May. As some of you know, she spends a lot of her time making up packets of stamps for sale in Save the Children Fund shops. This work makes up to £6,000 a year, which is a remarkable achievement. Congratulations also to my neighbours Pat and Iain, those stalwarts of The Lee Village Choir. They have recently become grandparents. As experienced grandparents, Mrs B. and I can vouch for the joy this brings. It really is the best fun you can have with clothes on. Editing the Newsletter has come a close runner up – although there is a lot more work involved! Next month’s Editor will be Gilbert Nockles. Please send contributions as usual to theleenewsletter@googlemail.com or if in hard copy to Gilbert at Mapleton, Potter Row by 12th May. |
