post box Shop post box: we’ll buy one!
By John Ford, Chairman of The Lee Parish Council

There has been a good deal of comment from shoppers that a post box by the shop would be an attractive addition and would be well used.

After lengthy discussions at our meeting on 10th March the Parish Council has decided that the best way to get a box for the Village Shop is to buy one – provided we can raise the money!

As the columns of this Newsletter have made clear there’s been much hostility to the idea that other post boxes at Sly Corner or the Old Post Office should be moved and monitoring by Royal Mail shows that both are fairly heavily used for rural boxes (figures for the Old Post Office box for mid-Jan to mid-Feb showed an average of 25-30 items posted a day, peaking to 68 or even 81 on one occasion).

Therefore we think the fairest and least contentious way to proceed is to try to raise the £400 needed for a new pedestal box. We’ve already had pledges from some kind individuals, but would hope to be able to split the bulk of the cost between the Parish Council and the Shop itself.

Watch this space for news of how the fund-raising proceeds – but if you’re in Sly Corner or at the Old Post Office end of Oxford Street don’t worry – the future of your post box is secure!
