Slam-dunkBy John Ford Harlem Globetrotters to visit The Lee? Well maybe not just yet. But if the legendary basketball team were to reform and be looking for a site to practise they have come to the right place. The Parish Council in cooperation with the Parish Hall Committee is delighted to announce new basket shooting facilities. These are more for budding basketball hopefuls than former basketball legends, but both are equally welcome. The new mini-court can be found at the Parish Hall next door to the newly refurbished tennis courts. A post and net were generously donated by a local resident. We are reliably informed by our sports correspondent that basketball is the fastest growing sport in the UK and you don’t have to be 6' 6" to play. The court is a shooting court rather than full size, but allows players the chance to practise core skills such as shooting and dribbling. The council has been mindful about providing more sporting facilities in the village and undertook a survey recently about what some of the younger residents might be interested in. The results that came back showed a need for more facilities to play football and basketball. We hope to handle the football needs by improving the surface of the playing field by the allotments. We are looking at ways of changing the way the grass is cut which may not create a pitch like Wembley but may encourage more people to use the area. We are also looking at the possibility of providing temporary nets, although our sports correspondent tells me that sweaters may still suffice. In any event we hope that the new court will work out well and be used. Thanks to all the members of the Parish Hall Committee and the Parish Council who helped get this done. |
