Leeside Nursery
By Suzanne Beaney

Our topic for the first half of this term was ‘growing’. The potatoes that the children planted in buckets are growing well. By the time you read this we will have tipped them out of the buckets, counted how many each bucket has produced and will have cooked and eaten them at snack time.
The children planted dwarf beans and nasturtiums to take home. The cress was also a success, as was the grass head the children made.
We took the children to see the Maypole dancing by kind invitation from Lee Common School and we were able to walk to the school via Manor Park this year as the cattle were not in the field.

dough mixing This half of the summer term our topic is ‘Zoo Animals’. So we took the children on a trip to Tring Museum to see the stuffed animals. All the children were excited about going on a coach together and found the animals very big at close range. They had a session on how things feel and were able to feel a turtle, starfish, seahorse, mole and beetle and were allowed to shake the seapod to see if they could hear the sea. A couple of the children didn’t like the dark environment on the top floor but of course they all liked the coach ride though some couldn’t keep their eyes open on the way home. The next day the parents said that the children had enjoyed it and the children themselves said they did, so I think it was a success.

The children always love to do cooking and their favorite thing to make is bread rolls because they can pull, stretch, pinch, punch and roll up their own piece of dough and can see how it rises in the warm before being cooked. The picture shows the dough being mixed.
