Editor or team? From the Editor
By Jonathan Batten

The clocks have changed so we are now officially in autumn. A rich and mellow season with the days shortening and running up to Christmas before you know it!

We had twenty days of good weather in September, which constituted the barbecue summer we were all waiting for, and now we are plunged into autumnal activities.

There’s plenty of news of those events which will happen locally in this month’s Newsletter and reports from October – I won’t point you to individual page numbers as it’s all interesting stuff!
We have controversy, mystery, culture vultures and a dearth of auditors. You may remember a particular ‘letter to the editor’ last month – W.I. members have produced some fiery responses.

What’s the Newsletter’s position? Is we or isn’t we the mouthpiece of the Establishment? I couldn’t possibly comment, but please tell us your views. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary ‘The Establishment’ is “a social group exercising authority or influence and resisting change”.

Since we face change in almost every facet of life these days is there any real ‘Establishment’ left?
I am reminded of those song lyrics by Sleepy John Estes:
“Change in the weather, change in the sea, come back baby you’ll see a change in me, everybody ought to change sometime, because sooner or later we have to go down in that lonesome ground”
Those old blues’ singers knew a thing or two – follow that advice and you too can be ‘anti’!

Next month’s Editor will be Gilbert Nockles. Please send your contributions by 12th November to theleenewsletter@googlemail.com or hard copy to Gilbert at Mapleton, Potter Row.
