Happy 90th By Joy Lock "A meeting to explain the part that Womens Institutes are taking in the reconstruction of Rural Life will take place on Tuesday 22nd April 1919 in the Guild Room at 3 o’clock." This announcement marked the birth of the Lee W.I. In August this year the 90th birthday was celebrated in the grounds of Mulberry Lodge. It was a hot sunny day filled with birdsong and the buzzing of bees as the members attacked the melting cream gateaux and scones. Jean Morris, the new Buckinghamshire president and the treasurer Beryl Coombs congratulated The Lee Institute on its longevity and active participation in the community. What would the ladies of 1919 have thought of the present day village and its progress? |
