Remembrance Sunday By Jon Swain and Janet Whittow On Sunday 8th November the annual Remembrance Day service was held at The Lee. The church was packed with members of the community of all ages, including members of the Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs and Scouts. All will have had their thoughts (and some, memories) about the events that brought us all together to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and their families, who had to endure the loss.
It was demonstrative of a close-knit village that so many people would
stand together at the Memorial and as moving as ever to hear the Roll of
Honour: so many from so few. The largest gathering that any present
could recall, illustrates that we will remember them. Along with those from the Lee who died in the two World Wars we remembered the last three veterans of the Great War who died this year and included in our prayers were the family of the young soldier who had died in Afghanistan a few hours previously and all who suffer in war.
After the church service we joined many people from the village at the War Memorial on the Green for the laying of wreaths and the Two Minutes silence. The names of the fallen were read by Leslie Robins and the Commendation by Peter Leslie. A wreath was laid by John Glanfield and added to by tributes from others present. Peter Gould’s trumpet playing added to the dignity and poignancy of the occasion. |
