To the EditorHell hath no fury like a Women’s Institute scorned. Leslie Robins Lee Common To the Editor I feel that Phil Ogley missed his target in the October Newsletter when he suggested the W.I. was part of the Establishment. In reality I think he may just be disappointed to read in the Newsletter that the W.I. meetings are not as exciting as he might have expected from an organisation best known for booing the Prime Minister and stripping naked for charity. Barnaby Usborne Lee Common To the Editor I am trying to find out more information about my Great Grandfather and his family. His name was Walter Palmer, son of George Palmer (the blacksmith) and Mary Puddephatt. I believe he was one of 11 children. His brother William (Bill) lived in the village until his death possibly in the 60s or 70s. I am also aware that someone in the village in the terraced cottages has a photo on their wall with Bill on it. I wondered whether you had any information about them. I have all the census entries etc. But it is the social history that is missing! I have visited The Lee and seen the inscription on the well, which was built by my great-grandfather George. I would welcome any information. Please email jules.cook@live.co.uk Julie Cook (nee Oxley) Sawbridgeworth Hertfordshire
To The EditorI am all for post-boxes, but how is it that the newly-erected pedestal box along Oxford Street has been placed directly in front of the historic and recently-refurbished Victorian Jubilee Well? To make matters a great deal worse a half-grown wheelie-bin has been placed on a concrete plinth next to the post-box and again in front of the Well. The once picturesque Well area now looks considerably less attractive than Steptoe’s scrap yard. The accompanying photo says it all. Have the authorities responsible for this disgraceful arrangement lost all sense of reasonable taste? What has taken place is just an insult to the parish. Would someone please do something about this? Mike Senior The Lee |
