A cathedral in the snowBy Reina Free As I walked along Kings Lane a few weeks ago, in the stillness of the early morning through deep snow, going through the sharp bend it struck me that the branches on the opposite sides of the lane were reaching out and touching one another shaping a kind of dome like one of a cathedral. This one was draped in virgin snow. In this cathedral with its narrow nave there is no pomp and religious piousness, just the hush of the wind in wondrous worship sometimes softly broken by the hesitant singing of my friends the blackbird and the robin. Approaching the clearing of the Nature Reserve the pale grey sky is lightening by the slow rising sun. Nature’s altar of celebration of the creation of a new day. For no person on earth, no scientist or expert on climate change is able to create this overwhelming beauty. Before too long the snow will have melted, the branches will be clothed again in an abundance of soft green leaves and snowdrops and bluebells, which have been snoozing underneath a blanket of heavy snow, will start to appear. In this cathedral there is no need to go on your knees. Just look up say a ‘word’ and give thanks. |
