By The Village Life in Flowers Committee (Judy, Janet, Elizabeth, Alison, Trish)

Happy New Year. May 2010 be a time of peace and achievement. As you plan your calendar we should like to tell you about a weekend we are organizing for September.

From 17th to 19th September all those involved with the Church of St John the Baptist, The Lee are looking forward to a very special weekend of activities in the beautiful surroundings of the Church.

This will include the opening on the Friday afternoon of a series of floral displays entitled ‘A Village Life in Flowers’, a concert on the Saturday evening, a family Harvest Festival celebration including children from the village school on the morning of Sunday 19th, culminating in a celebration of Evensong at 6:00 pm followed by a Bring and Share Supper. In between these events, the church will be open at specified times for visitors to enjoy the floral displays.

During all three days we will be celebrating the rich and astonishing variety of village life and would like to invite your organisation to be part of this.

We will be allocating a part of the church (typically a window sill) to any organisation that wishes to participate. Last time we did this in 1998 around 17 village groups took part. This is an opportunity for your group/club/ business to ‘showcase’ or promote yourselves, your talents, etc. For example, you might want to include artefacts, photos or memorabilia from your group with an appropriate floral arrangement to illustrate or interpret it.
The Church will be open from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening and we are going to offer tea, coffee and cakes with proceeds from the sale of these going to Church funds. We do not plan to charge for admission but anticipate that visitors will make a contribution to the Church. There will be an exhibition of the work of local artists in the Old Church during the weekend.

We will have a leaflet giving the names and contact addresses of all the groups and organisations taking part and we do hope that you will be among them.

If you would like to take part or receive more information please contact Janet Whittow 01296-624568 janet.whittow@gmail.com or Judy Hart 837328 judy.hart@virgin.net.

A Brief for your display:
•    Check the size of your allocated area, access to the church can be arranged via Judy and Janet.
•    Use accessories, artefacts, photos, posters, text, etc. to explain/promote the work, aims or ethos of your organisation (please note we cannot be responsible for very valuable items, though the church will be manned at all times whilst open to the public).
•    Your organisation will need to purchase its own flowers, though florists’ floral foam/‘oasis’ can be obtained at cost price from Trish Swain.
•    There will be people available to help you and offer advice. If you need vases, containers, etc. please contact Trish Swain on 837752 (and there are a number in the church).
•    With enough notice it may be possible to organise some helpers to arrange your flowers once you have purchased them.
•    It is a good idea if the colours of your chosen flowers coordinate with your organisation’s uniform, logo, etc.
•    You will need to make arrangements for the collection of your artefacts on the Monday after the exhibition ends.

Please do not put ‘oasis’ on the compost heap, and dispose of any rubbish at home.
