manor house in snow Canapés and Carols
By Christine Kalveks

On arrival at the Seniors on the evening of 19th December, guests could see several rows of boots in the hallway; testimony to an audience determined not to let a little snow spoil an evening of Christmas music by The Lee Village Choir. And we were not disappointed!

Under the indefatigable baton of Joy Lock we were treated to a range of traditional carols supplemented by lesser known arrangements such as Rutter’s Nativity Carol, Gibbs’s The Stable Door and Gardner’s version of The Holly and The Ivy, composed for St Paul’s Girls’ School. (The current tradition at the school is to incorporate a sequence of hand movements in each chorus – a challenge for The Lee Village Choir next year perhaps?)

Soloist Alison Thorman’s contributions were clearly appreciated by the audience, particularly her rendition of O Holy Night. Gordon Cumming’s piano accompaniment was flawless throughout, and Andrew Burnett’s original commentary offered a wealth of background detail about the programme.

After the performance we all enjoyed delicious canapés and mulled wine in the festive setting of Mike and Jenny’s lovely home. Well done to all concerned for a splendid evening!
