envelope Box yields treasure trove
By Janet Whittow

For some time there has been a cast iron strongbox in the transept of Lee Parish Church
(according to one Church stalwart it’s been there for the best part of 60 years!). Unfortunately someone had locked it before going on to throw away – or more likely lose – the key. Recently the decision was made to get it opened.

letter Sadly no actual treasure was found and not much that was specifically relevant to the church. What it did contain was a fascinating insight into the social history of the Parish dating back to the end of the 19th century. Among dozens of items was this letter from Ivor Stewart-Liberty conveying ownership of the War Memorial to the Parish Council, complete with hand-written envelope, and also a book which marks the enlargement of both the Church and the Parish at the turn of the 20th century.

treasure tove All these items were put on display in the Church on 14th February, and so that everyone has a chance to look at them and share any insights before they are archived we also plan to take them along to the Parish Hall for our annual Church Meeting on Thursday 22nd April. Everyone is welcome to come along to the meeting at 8:00 pm or, if you prefer, to join us after the meeting for refreshments at about 9:00 pm.

Personal memories will bring so much to the information on paper. We do hope you will join us.
