No 16: Ridgeway around Bledlow

By Rudi Kalveks

It’s the end of summer but there’s still time to put the bike on the car to leave The Lee and explore a little further afield. This mainly off-road route starts from the Lions Free House in Bledlow village, some 8 miles WSW, and follows various tracks around Radnage before returning along the Ridgeway. It features a stiff climb up to Bledlow Ridge and a couple of steep bumpy descents.

Route Finding:
  1. Turn left out of The Lions PH car park and take track uphill.
  2. At junction with Ridgeway turn left and head downhill.
  3. At crossroads turn right into Wigan’s Lane, then at brow of hill continue straight ahead onto bridleway across field.
  4. At end of wood turn right for a steep climb up to Bledlow Ridge.
  5. Cross the Chinnor Road onto narrow bridleway for descent to Radnage. Take care joining lane at end of bridleway.
  6. At crossroads in Radnage follow signs to Bennetts End.
  7. At T-junction after PH in Bennetts End take track to right.
  8. After a mile the track veers uphill to the right. Follow bridleway through wood to emerge onto the A40 near the radio mast.
  9. Turn right onto A40 for 300 yards, then take bridleway on right heading downhill into wood. After 1/3 mile take steep downhill branch.
  10. Turn right onto Ridgeway for long flat section past Chinnor.
  11. At junction of bridleways by houses in Wainhill take downhill signed Bledlow.
Total distance: 11.5 miles. Three climbs of 200 ft. Allow two hours, depending on conditions.
Don’t forget: Helmet, puncture repair kit, water, go slow for horses.
