By Viv Robins, Clerk to The Lee Parish Council

Those of you who know about the excellent work done by the Chesham Voluntary Hospital Car Service will be sad to hear of the death of its long-time co-ordinator Anne Wells. Despite being disabled she worked tirelessly to match up those people who had hospital appointments but no transport with those who were willing and able to take them – an increasingly difficult task of recent years as a number of the regular drivers stood down. In fact the phone would often ring at Crocketts and a voice demand without pre-amble: “Can I speak to Leslie?” as Anne tried, usually successfully, to lure my allegedly retired father back into the fray.

Anne’s death leaves a huge hole but one which will have to be filled if the car service, which has been operating for nigh on 60 years and is widely used in this part of Bucks, is not to go out of business. The job which, like that of the volunteers, is unpaid apart from expenses would particularly suit a disabled or housebound person. The only real qualification is access to a phone and a list of names – together with plenty of time and determination!
If you think you might be interested please contact Ray Challinor, who is doing the job temporarily, on 776200 or by e-mail at ray@challinorq.demon.co.uk.

The same applies if you’d like to put yourself forward as a driver – it doesn’t matter how much or how little time you would have to spare. But I reckon any team which numbers my 90-year-old father among its stalwarts is definitely in need of some fresh blood!
