hs 2 field Clerk’s Corner
By Viv Robins, Clerk to The Lee Parish Council

By the time you read this George Osborne will have delivered his public spending review and in a recent interview the Transport Secretary Philip Hammond disclosed that it would contain a mention of HS2. However hopes that the government might use the occasion to announce the scrapping of the project have long since been dashed.

That being so the Parish Council decided at its last meeting in September that it would be a good idea to call another public meeting to review the progress of the campaign against HS2 which is now being fought on a large number of fronts. The date for this has now been fixed for Wednesday 17th November, 7:30 pm at The Lee Parish Hall.

Keep an eye on posters and The Lee website for further details.

Waste re-cycling
...yes, I knew that was a topic that was bound to keep your attention. A new joint contract is currently being negotiated for the disposal of waste (a County Council responsibility) and waste collection (a matter for District councils) – and Clerks like me have been kept informed of progress every labyrinthine step of the way. The new contract is intended not only to reduce costs but also to improve the service, for example by allowing for the collection of additional dry recyclable materials such as cans and plastics. However these developments may not find favour with all: you may remember that the roll-out (probably the right word in this case) of wheelie bins in Chiltern was put on hold until the new collection contract was in place. Be aware (or be warned) that this is now expected to start in November 2012.

Is it that time again?
Can you believe it is nearly 10 years since the last Census? That was in 2001 – which means the next one is due next year, on 27th March to be precise. That date is a Sunday, which should makes things easier for people who have to stay away from home for work reasons – or any reason! – during the week. There’ll be plenty of information being put out about it by the Office for National Statistics nearer the time.
