By Jon Swain, Chairman By the time that the cricket season of 2011 gets underway, England will have retained the Ashes, with Graeme Swann the leading wicket-taker and Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell amongst the runs. As I write, Australia has just slipped below England in the Test rankings. Sad for our old rivals… In the meantime, The Lee Cricket Club must reflect on the season past and the glories to come. Several of our promising young players will be performing in Sri Lanka with junior sides from Chesham Cricket Club. Two years ago they toured in Cape Town; now it will be Kandy and Colombo. The Club had its AGM in mid-October and now we face the 2011 season with new captains for each team and the anticipation that more of the young players will feature in adult cricket, playing prominent parts. Clubman of the year was Jon Goldby, a reflection of his efforts in the rebuilding and then managing the bar and barbecue. Of course many others have contributed as well and grateful thanks to them. We are putting the ground ‘to bed’ for the winter. That entails scarifying, re-seeding and top-dressing the square. Each year we try to improve the quality of the playing surface to help all our players develop their skills. We will be running indoor nets after Christmas, so if anyone out there wants to start, or resume, their cricket career we would love to hear from you. See our website at: www.theleecc.org.uk |
