The march of civilisation
By Mike Senior

Thanks to our current Parish Clerk Viv Robins I have been able to read through the official letters sent by a Mr Piddington who was The-Lee Parish Clerk in the early 1920s. It is an interesting commentary on how man has progressed over the past 90 years, as you will gather from the following extracts:
5th March 1921: To the Amersham R.D.C. “...will you kindly let me have a reply to my letter of 1 Nov 1920 re – bad state of roads in Herewig lane.”
2nd July 1921: To County Hall, Aylesbury. “...would you place four danger signs at Swan Bottom cross-roads. This is a most dangerous corner.”
4th August 1921: To Amersham R.D.C. “...would you kindly let me know what Amersham and Aylesbury Councils have decided to do as regards the repairs in Herewig lane.”
29th April 1922: To Amersham   R.D.C. “...the attention of the Amersham R.D.C. is drawn to the disgraceful state of the roads in the parish of The-Lee.”
24th Feb 1923: To the representative of The-Lee on the Amersham R.D.C. “...the holes in Potter Row at the corner of Leather Lane are very dangerous.”
1st Sept 1924: To the Amersham R.D.C. “...we draw your attention to the poor state of the roads in this parish.”
2nd Nov 1924: To the Aylesbury Council. “...we urge you to repair the roads in this parish, especially the road at Hunts Green.”
25th June 1925: To Bucks C.C. “...would you kindly erect a danger sign at the top of Ballinger Hill (Sly Corner) in consequence of this road being used by motor buses.”
There are many more of Mr Piddington’s letters in the same vein. A final extract confirms that civilisation continues to progress:
24th June 1921: To the Ministry of Health, London. “...will you kindly send me Memorandum 114/X and form X58 as stated in Memo 179/X as early as possible.”
It’s good to think that these days we are spared all of the above. Things are getting better and better all the time.
